February 1, 2006 - Two bikes for the price of, er, two
Simon's returned from a sunny South Africa after blasting around Cape Town on Yamaha's new Fazer, well, Fazers to be precise. Here's what he and his permatan have to say.
“The old Fazer had so many fans, Yamaha had a job on its hands to make a bike that would appeal to all those that had bought the original bike, plus make it attractive to a whole bunch of new potential owners. So they built two bikes just to make life a little easier. The first, the Fazer FZ1 is the true replacement for the practical old Fazer. Powered by the plump and juicy R1 engine, and yes, it's the current one, not a shabby old 'un, there's loads of power in the midrange and it should propel you to silly speeds. The fuel injection isn't perfect and it's a bit sluggish down low, but it's an eminently rideable machine. The comfort remains, the handling is smart and neat, just like its styling. The second bike should broaden the appeal of the Fazer family to those with a hooligan streak in them. The engine and chassis are the same, but the naked FZ1 makes you go noisy and boisterous as soon as you hop on it. It'll wheelie all day and offers peg down action at the drop of a hat. The pricing is spot on for both bikes too. The naked one beats the competition, coming in at £7,199 while the half-faired bike is £7,599. I've got a fair idea how each bike performs against its rivals, but to find out you'll have to buy the March issue, out at the end of the February. Don't worry, it's short month, so you won't have to wait for too long.”
